U21s Summary: United v Liverpool

Sunday 06 October 2024 14:00

Manchester United's Under-21s suffered a narrow Premier League 2 defeat to Liverpool at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

A second-half finish from Tyler Morton was enough to earn the visitors a 1-0 victory in the lunchtime kick-off, despite a closely fought encounter with few outstanding goalscoring chances.

The decisive moment came when United goalkeeper Dermot Mee attempted to slide a pass into midfield from the penalty area, only to see his ball intercepted by the alert Morton.

Mee reacted well to save Morton's initial strike on goal, but the Liverpool midfielder showed considerable composure to pause, shift the ball to his left foot and loft the ball through a thicket of defenders and into the vacant net.
Ethan Ennis had the best chance of the first half against Liverpool.

The first half was a tight affair, with two sights of goal for Ethan Wheatley the best rewards for United's attacking play.

Just before the interval, Dan Gore did find Ethan Ennis with an impressive pass, but the forward's effort was saved by Kornel Miscuir.

The half-time whistle followed, with both sides locked in for a tense contest.

Ethan Williams had a decent effort saved after the resumption, before Morton robbed Mee and delivered the game's pivotal moment.

United tested the Merseysiders hard throughout the remainder of the game, but Liverpool managed to sit deep during the final stages and repel United's repeated searches for an equaliser.

Travis Binnion's team have another chance to add to the club's Premier League 2 points tally at the end of the month, when we visit Newcastle.
